A new study by the University of Alberta’s School of Business found 33 per cent of downtown Edmonton’s storefronts are sitting vacant. The Downtown Business Association reports that 6 new businesses are planning to open with the help of startup grant money from the city and province.

The Downtown Business Association (DBA) announced that Night Patrol Thursday which is funded by the City of Edmonton’s Downtown Vibrancy Fund has been patrolling since January. Each patrol team is made up of a security guard from Backwoods Security and a peer support worker from Hiregood who have a connection with Indigenous people and people living on the street. Two patrol teams patrol downtown streets from 12:30 to 8:30 a.m. everyday.

The City is justifying the parking rate increase by saying it is long overdue and in line with parking rates in other cities. That may be but Puneeta McByran of the Downtown Business Association says one of the biggest complaints they receive has to do with parking.
