TWO EMERGENCY SHELTERS TO ONLY SHORTLY
Should there be a cold snap in the next few weeks Edmonton will be better prepared to provide shelter for the homeless.
On November 30, 2022 City Council agreed to pay $7.5 million to convert an old hotel into a 209 room shelter which was to be open by the end of December. We're now into mid January and only 59 rooms are completed and with the remaining 150 rooms due to be completed later this month or in February.
On Novemver 23, 2022 the City approved a temporary shelter on the south side with space to house up to 160 people on extremely cold days. The site is Hope Mission's warehouse and will not be open 24 hours or for walk-ins, arther will use 2 buses to transport people between downtown and the warehouse.
