The Lewis Farms rec centre was first proposed in 2005 and part of the neighbourhood development plan since 2007. Over the years there have been many setbacks but construction of the multi-purpose project began yesterday and completion is estimated to be 2028.
Inflation and supply chain issues have the city reconsidering scaling back on some features of the Lewis Farm Rec Centre. Eliminating a diving pool and shortening another pool would save $58 million dollars which could be funneled elsewhere. Even with the cutbacks the Lewis Farm Rec Centre would still be a first class facility including indoor ice rinks, a fitness area, an aquatic centre, a gymnasium, an Edmonton Public Library branch, and a district park with sports fields.
