Rachel Notely who heads up the Alberta NDP has said "it's good leadership to consider your role leading up to an election and to consider your role after an election". The NDP elected the largest largest Opposition caucus in the province's history chances are it wil be a number of years before the next election and although otely has been a fixture in the Alberta politics and in the Legislature for 15 year, she, like all of us is not getting any younger and faces a tough decision regarding her future.
If there were any doubts about who would be the NDP nominee for the riding they were put to rest on Saturday when Rachel Notley accepted the NDP nomination. Edmonton has long been an NDP stronghold, one the NDP is not taking for granted. In addition the NDP plans to set up a base in Calgary to bolster support there and southern Alberta. There's not that many weeks left to campaign so as both a candidate and leader of the provincial NDP Rachel Notley will probably be working overtime on the hustings until election day.
There are two articles in today's Edmonton Journal that reminded me of a quote that has been attributed to Elanor Roosevelt. The quote says "Small minds discuss people, average minds discuss events and great minds discuss ideas."
The first article I referred to was written by city Councillor Michael Janz. In the article below Councillor Janz explains the reasons why he voted in favor of increasing the budget to improve Edmonton's network of bike lanes. His article was the best I've read by a city councillor regarding either side of the debate.
The second article (below) is by Edmonton Journal columnist David Staples. Both Premier Danielle Smith and Rachel Notley, leader of the opposition have strong ideas and are good communicators of them. As David Staples writes the winner of the May 2023 election will be the one who wins the battle of ideas.
One of the reasons the focaLOCAL network was developed is to give people in a community a place where they can civilly present, share, discuss, debate, etc. their ideas and thoughts on a variety of issues and topics so don't hold back.

It seems every political party has internal conflicts so its not surprising that at a news conference yesterday NDP leader Rachel Notley was asked about a letter alleging disrespect and mistreatment of party volunteers as well as other issues. Rachel Notley responded that the executive is looking into it but would not commit to making the results of the investigation public.
