JUST A CLOSER WALK WITH THEE is an old spiritual that people sang/sing as testiony of the comforting presence of the Lord. It seems sometimes the Lord sends His representatives to bring a comforting presence as He has with SAFEWALK. After there had been attacks on Muslim women Sisters Dialogue and the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues formed the pilot project now called SAFEWALK to provide a buddy system for Muslim, Black, and racialized women and girls with a volunteer buddy to ensure they feel comfortable as they go about their day-to-day tasks.
Earlier in the week I posted an article about the death of sixteen year old Karanveer Sahota as the result of a beating he took while waiting for a bus in front of McNally High School on April 8th. It is truly a SAD, SENSELESS & SICK story.
The fact that City council has dedicated additional funding support for women's shelters brings to the fore another SAD, SENSELESS & SICK story that continues unabated. Thankfully the shelters and the other supports help thousands of women and children annually but unfortunately it comes after the abuse has wrecked lives and families. We need to focus on finding and funding ways to prevent abuse from occuring.
