When 86 year old Fred Wasylyshyn was walking his dog on Thursday he noticed a young girl walking toward a stormwater pond. He yelled hoping she would hear and stop but she kept walking toward the water so Wasylyshyn got off his scooter and began to walk toward her. The ground was rough and muddy so he fell, got up and reached the water He waded in, grabbed the girl's foot. pulled her towards him and got her to shore.
Onlookers witnessed what was happening and called paramedics. The young girl was taken to hospital for observation and Wasylyshyn returned home shaken, wet and muddy but feeling good about being able to help the young girl.
Wasylyshyn’s wife, Ruth commented that her husband is a very caring person and would do anything to help anybody out, which to me is the distinuishing trait of a local hero.
