The UofA has made public their strategies to increase enrollment from the current 44,000 to 60,000, a 35% increase in the next decade. Much of the projected increase will be international students, many who remain in Alberta after graduation. The increase in enrollment will increase revenues which would be invested in hiring faculty and staff. Tuition alone will not cover the increased costs so there will be the need for the province to provide additional funding.
The UofA is already a leader in research, artificial intelligence, health, well-being, energy and the environment and will make these a continuing priority to become one of the leading research universities in both Canada and the world.
In 2005 the UofA purchased what was originally the former Hudson’s Bay building which first opened in 1939. Since then the building has been renovated, remodeled and renamed as the Enterprise Square building. The additional move of 500 people will bring the total to over 600 people working in Enterprise Square and will be a big help in revitalizing the downtown core.
