In 1922, the Oliver community was founded as the West End Community League. In the mid-1930s the community chose to name itself Oliver which was named after Oliver School named after Frank Oliver and the name of the area. Since 2020 Indigenous as well as community members from other marginalized groups have made it clear to that they felt hurt, uncomfortable and not welcome in a community named after Frank Oliver. Frank Oliver was known to strongly dislike Indigenous people and others who didn't fit into what he thought was the British white ideal and as the minister of interior helped enact policies that targeted Indigenous land rights and restricted immigration.

Uncover Oliver is grassroots movement of community members coming and working together to choose and present a new name to the city by next summer,
