LONG AWAITED DEMOLITION BEGINS
The Exhibition Grounds is some of Edmonton's most valuable property but it has been sitting vacant for years. After many years demolition of the vacant and derelict buildings at the Exhibition Grounds has begun, starting with the main stables at the horse racing track. There are redevelopment plans for the Exhibition Grounds and the area near the former Northlands Coliseum but before they can go ahead all exisiting structures, including Northlands Coliseum must be demolished. It costs the city over $1 million a year to maintain the Coliseum and no doubt there are costs involved with keeping the other buildings as well. Not only does it cost taxpayers to maintain these building, as long as redevelopment is delayed all potential tax revenues are lost.
