2023 STATUTORY HOLIDAYS IN ALBERTA

Statutory holidays are days when employees are entitled to general holiday pay if they have worked for the same employer for at least 30 workdays in the 12 months before the holiday. In addition, employees must not have been absent without consent on the last scheduled day before the holiday or the first day after and must not have refused to work on the general holiday when requested or scheduled.

Here are the statutory holidays in Alberta for 2023:

  1. New Year’s Day: Sunday, January 1, 2023, Observed on Monday, January 2, 2023
  2. Alberta Family Day (Third Monday in February): Monday, February 20, 2023
  3.  Good Friday: Friday, April 7, 2023
  4.  Victoria Day (Monday before May 25): Monday, May 22, 2023
  5.  Canada Day: Saturday, July 1, 2023, Observed on Monday, July 3, 2023
  6.  Labour Day (First Monday in September): Monday, September 4, 2023
  7.  Thanksgiving Day Second (Monday in October): Monday, October 9, 2023
  8.  Remembrance Day: Saturday, November 11, 2023, Observed on November 13, 2023
  9.  Christmas Day: Monday, December 25, 2023

In addition, Alberta has four optional statutory holidays, where employers can decide whether or not employees get the day off work off on these optional holidays:

  •  Easter Monday (First Monday following Easter): Monday, April 10, 2023
  •  Heritage Day (First Monday in August): Monday, August 7, 2023
  •  National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: Saturday, September 30, 2023
  •  Boxing Day: Tuesday, December 26, 2023

If New Year’s Day, Canada Day, Remembrance Day, or Christmas Day, falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it will be observed the following Monday. If Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, it will be observed on the following Monday, and if it falls on a Sunday or a Monday, it will be observed on the following Tuesday.

Federal Statutory Holidays:

Albertans who work in federally regulated sectors get the day off on federal statutory holidays:

  1. New Year’s Day: Sunday, January 1, 2023
  2.  Good Friday: Friday, April 7, 2023
  3.  Victoria Day: Monday, May 22, 2023
  4.  Canada Day: Saturday, July 1, 2023
  5.  Labour Day: Monday, September 4, 2023
  6.  National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: Saturday, September 30, 2022
  7.  Thanksgiving: Monday, October 9, 2023
  8.  Remembrance Day: Saturday, November 11, 2023
  9.  Christmas Day: Monday, December 25, 2023
  10.  Boxing Day: Tuesday, December 26, 2023

If New Year’s Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls on a non-working day (eg: Sunday), the working day immediately before or after that general holiday is a day off for federal employees.

If Canada Day (July 1) falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on Monday, July 2.

Calgary and Edmonton, observe September 30 (Saturday, September 30, 2023) as a statutory holiday for their employees.
