ABANDONED HOMES MORE THAN EYESORES

Abandoned homes present many problems to a neighbourhood. They are eyesores, devalue adjacent properties, become targets for squatters and break-ins, attract rodents and pests and are fire hazards.

To deal with the problem the Community Property Safety Team (CPST) was created in April as an 18 month pilot project. The CPST is a collaboration between the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services. After they identify abandoned properties they begin by securing them. If proper boarding and additional security measures, like fencing or security, don't work. The CPST has the power to order the demolition of a home, with or without the owner's consent.

Do you think the creation of the CPST is a good and effective way to deal with abandoned properties.
